Complementary Therapies

Our range of Complementary Therapies are in place to provide both support and relaxation to patients and their carers on our Inpatient Unit, in our Wellbeing Centre and in their own homes in the community.

Our Complementary Therapies Team

We have one qualified Complementary Therapist who works both at the Hospice and in the local community, supported by a range of volunteers. We are extremely lucky to have volunteer therapists who each hold the relevant qualification for their area of practice and give their time freely for the benefit of Hospice patients collectively. This enables the Hospice to offer a varied range of Complementary Therapies to patients and their loved ones.

How Complementary Therapies help

The therapies are designed to complement conventional medical treatment and are carried out in a warm, comfortable and quiet environment.

Therapies are designed to:

• Help patients feel good about themselves
• Relax and ease stress
• Help patients cope with symptoms

Soft music is played during therapies, and after treatments it is preferable to have a drink and rest quietly.

Our treatments

Our treatments are not offered as an alternative to conventional medical treatments. Only one treatment can be given per day, lasting 20-45 minutes, with shorter sessions available on request. Treatments take place in our dedicated Complementary Therapies room, on our Inpatient Unit or in patients’ own homes and our treatments include:

• Massage
• Indian Head Massage
• Wellbeing Therapies (facials, manicures or hand & foot therapy)
• Reflexology
• Reiki
• Aromatherapy
• Relaxation & Wellbeing (techniques to enhance self-care and guided relaxation)*

Complementary Therapies facilities

Our Complementary Therapy room provides a warm, welcoming space designed to promote relaxation and comfort. With soft mood lighting, and gentle music, our environment is carefully curated to create a sense of calm. Our tranquil setting allows patients to fully relax and feel at ease. Treatments also take place on our Inpatient Unit, and our Complementary Therapist is now able to visit patients in their own home.
