Families, friends & carers

It can be very scary having a loved one come into the Hospice. Many people think it is just ‘where you go to die’ but many patients spend time with us at other stages of their illness. We help people with pain management, symptom control and rehabilitation after surgery amongst other things. We are not just here for the end-of-life and with our knowledge and expertise in palliative care, we are often well placed to help people right from diagnosis.

Our Hospice

Dr Kershaw’s Hospice has an Inpatient Unit and Wellbeing Centre. Our state-of-the-art Inpatient Unit can house up to 12 patients at any one time with eight single and two twin en-suite private rooms.

Our Wellbeing Centre provides a range of activities tailored to a person’s individual care needs, and is a great way of meeting others within a supported environment, accessing therapeutic care, connecting with healthcare professionals, and attending to your wellbeing holistically.

Counselling for loved ones

As well as supporting our patients, our Hospice Counselling Team provide dedicated support for families and friends who have experienced the loss of a loved one at the Hospice. Counselling sessions take place in a calm, quiet space and our counsellors offer a non-judgemental listening ear along with respect and dignity during the most difficult of times. To find out more about accessing a counselling assessment, please contact the Hospice Counselling Team.

Bereavement Support

At Dr Kershaw’s our support for families and friends doesn’t end after the death of a loved one in our care.

We support families with bereavement calls and our Wellbeing Centre Team offers Bereavement Support Groups and Wellbeing Walks offering care, understanding and a time and space for sharing feelings about grief and loss.

Community Services

Our Hospice at Home Nursing Team consists of experienced hospice nurses who visit patients in the last weeks / months of their lives, providing a flexible and responsive nursing service in the patient’s own home.

Our Caring Hands Team is made up of specially chosen and trained health care assistants who visit patients in their own homes, to provide quality and individualised care that is flexible and responsive to the needs of the patient and their loved ones.

Thank you for being there for my mum. You have helped us all individually and have been such an important part of our journey.
