Volunteers save the day at our Royton Shop

Three plucky volunteers and the Shop Manager rescued the Hospice’s Royton shop following a flood.

Our Royton charity store on Market Square has now reopened after a water heater in the upstairs kitchen burst. Six ceiling tiles plummeted to the ground after water damaged the ceiling on Friday 11th July.

To protect donations from the Oldham community, volunteers sprang into action. Pat Norris, Marian Pickford and Chris Dooley joined Shop Manager Amanda Allison to clear the rubbish, paint the walls and fix the tiles.

Within three hours, the shop re-opened to the public.

Chris Dooley, one of the volunteers, said: “I love working at the Royton Shop. The staff, volunteers and customers are all amazing – we have such a laugh together! The atmosphere is brilliant, it’s a great place to be.”

Over on our Hospice Facebook page, followers praised the volunteers.

One follower said: “Amazing teamwork and well done to all the volunteers helping to reopen it.”

Another added: “You all do a wonderful job.”

Mike McArdle, Hospice Head of Retail said: “Our volunteers are the heart of our Hospice. If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t be able to offer the service that we do.”

Dr Kershaw’s Hospice is only one-quarter funded by the NHS and relies on donations to sell in its shops.

Our stores are in Shaw, Royton and Lees, plus we have a furniture outlet called The Furniture Hub.

Our volunteers are the heart of our Hospice. If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t be able to offer the service that we do.
