Volunteers help to keep our Hospice doors open

With funding cuts impacting hospices across the UK, we thanked volunteers during Volunteers’ Week for helping our Hospice to continue providing high-quality care.

Last year volunteers saved the Hospice approximately £539,800 in staffing costs. In total, 404 volunteers contributed 39,947 hours of their time.

For Volunteers’ Week (2nd-8th June), we highlighted the hard work of volunteers on social media and filmed a video of staff members thanking them. Volunteers also enjoyed a summer party, which was made possible by Chadderton Social and Bowling Club hiring out their room for free.

One of the main areas of volunteering for the Hospice is in retail. Dr Kershaw’s has a large furniture and home décor outlet called The Furniture Hub, and charity shops in Lees, Shaw and Royton. An army of volunteer drivers, warehouse crew, till assistants, and even a librarian, help to sell new and preloved items to raise funds for patients and their families.

Kath Mills, a volunteer at Dr Kershaw’s’ Lees shop, said: “I have been volunteering at Dr Kershaw’s’ shops for five years. I love giving my time to such a worthy cause. I have made lots of friends and feel really appreciated. I would encourage anyone to join the team.”

Dr Kershaw’s recruits volunteers throughout the year, and has a dedicated team to support people in their roles.

Volunteers have the opportunity to make a real impact and attend events like the upcoming Rose to Remember service and Summer Fayre.

Glenn Drake-Owen, volunteer coordinator at Dr Kershaw’s Hospice, added: “Time is one of the most precious things for all of us, so those who give up theirs for Dr Kershaw’s have my utmost admiration. Our volunteers keep our Hospice running. Without them, we simply couldn’t provide the services we do.

“We welcome volunteers young or old to help us with everything from events to baking and admin. The Oldham community has so much to offer in terms of skills and experience – we are blessed to be based in such a wonderful town.”
