Menopause Friendly Accreditation on the cards for our Hospice

Dr Kershaw’s Hospice is working towards Menopause Friendly Accreditation to support staff going through the menopause.

Menopause generally occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, although it can start earlier. Symptoms can include hot flushes, fatigue and mood swings, which can impact concentration and productivity. Recent initiatives at Dr Kershaw’s have included the introduction of menopause awareness sessions, a new lighter uniform option, and a menopause email bulletin to staff.

Mandi Halton, Hospice HR Manager said: “To give our patients the best experience possible, we also need to take care of our employees. We are proud to employ a large proportion of female workers, many of whom have reached or are approaching menopause. Their wellbeing is incredibly important to us, and we want them to feel supported and confident at work. The impact of menopause cannot be underestimated, which is why we’re thinking of new ways to create an inclusive working environment. By retaining their invaluable experience, we can continue to provide high-quality care for the Oldham community.”

Dr Kershaw's can currently display the Committed to being Menopause Friendly badge whilst working towards our accreditation.

Earlier this week, the government launched the independent Menopause Advisory Group to help menopausal women to stay in work. Chaired by Mariella Frostrup, it will advise employers on practical workplace changes to improve retention and support.

According to the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development (CIPD), more than half of women have missed work due to menopause symptoms. One in ten have to leave work completely, costing businesses approximately £1.5billion each year.

Mandi added: “It’s great to see that the government is taking menopause seriously; it’s something that affects a large proportion of the population. As a hospice, our values include inclusiveness, dignity and compassion. Achieving Menopause Friendly Accreditation reflects our dedication to treating everyone who comes into contact with Dr Kershaw’s with respect.”
