Hospice’s gardens named ‘Outstanding’ for second year by North West in Bloom

For the second year running, Dr Kershaw’s’ gardens have been awarded an ‘Outstanding – Level 5’ certificate by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and North West in Bloom.

The It’s Your Neighbourhood scheme celebrates volunteer-led community gardening projects that improve the local environment.

Held on Wednesday, November 5, the awards ceremony at the Toughsheet Community Stadium in Bolton brought together green-fingered staff and volunteers from across the region.

Dr Kershaw’s’ gardens have recently been redesigned to be more dementia-friendly, and a new wellbeing centre is currently under construction. The space will provide a peaceful zone for therapy, bereavement support, dementia care and wellbeing services.

An ‘Outstanding – Level 5’ result is the highest tier of the awards, demonstrating significant achievement across three core criteria: community participation, environmental responsibility, and gardening achievement.

Louise Whitehead and Sarah Mcilmunn from Dr Kershaw’s Hospice were presented with the certificate by the award-winning gardener Jason Williams, also known as ‘The Cloud Gardener’.

Louise Whitehead, Dr Kershaw’s Hospice Gardener, said: “We had the honour of attending the presentation ceremony, and it was lovely to be in the company of so many amazing local community garden groups. Thank you to everyone at the RHS and North West in Bloom for such a brilliant scheme to recognise and celebrate all of the good that gardens of all shapes and sizes give to the local community.”
