Attendees of Dr Kershaw’s’ Dementia Hub have described the service as a “godsend”.
The Wednesday sessions support anyone who is affected by dementia, including people with a diagnosis, carers, and loved ones. Participants enjoy everything from board games to crafts and musical performances. For many people, the chance to meet others in a similar situation offers comfort.
It is estimated that 9.1% of the Oldham population provides unpaid care, with 3% providing 50 hours or more.
One Dementia Hub attendee, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I would be lost if I could not access somewhere to find the help I need to understand what my mum is experiencing. It is warm, friendly, welcoming and informative. I’ve never felt as welcomed into a group with such supportive, caring people.”
Many attendees are supported by their loved ones, including friends, family members and spouses. This includes Don and Karen Westwood, who described the Wellbeing Centre as a “godsend”.
Karen, who has dementia, said: “I call it my happy place.”
Don added: “It’s been hard work for us to come to terms with what has happened. But since the first day we came, we’ve enjoyed it.”
